The simple answer, this is the Law. Found in Section 86(1) of the Road Traffic Act No 11 of 2002 which states “No person shall use or cause or permit any person to use a motor vehicle or trailer on a road unless there is in force in relation to the use of such vehicle or trailer by that person or that other person, as the case may be, such a policy of insurance or such a security in respect of third-party risks as complies with the requirements of this part”

But to provide additional clarity, this exists to prevent any victim of a road traffic accident from going uncompensated, be it property damage or bodily injury/death. Not only do we comply with the law when one has valid motor insurance, we also provide a security in place to other road users.
